Meditations on Madison Bumgarner

by Wendy Thurm on June 22, 2011

Throw strikes, throw strikes they say

Command the fastball, pound the zone

The fastball sets you up, sets them up

The hitters, it sets the hitters up

The fastball

The fastball sets up the slider

Sets up the curve ball

The fastball

Madison Bumgarner throws a fastball

And it is fast, his fastball

Not the fastest, but fast

Mad Bum they call him, or Bummey, or Maddie, or good

They call him good, they call him very good

He throws that fastball

He pounds the zone, Mad Bum pounds the zone

So young still

So young is Mad Bum

Fourth youngest pitcher ever to win a World Series game

A hero

A hero just old enough to drink the bubbly

He stumbled last night, Mad Bum did

He stumbled

He tumbled, really

A World Series hero tumbled

He tumbled

He pounded the zone with the fastball

The fastball that is fast

The fastball that sets up the slider, the curve

He pounded the zone

And the zone pounded back

Hit after hit after hit

Nine hits

Eight runs

One out

Not a hero

Not a hero on this night

Mad Bum is young, so young

So young he can barely drink the bubbly

And that fastball

That fastball is fast

That fastball will make him a hero again
